What does it mean to consciously consume?

In a fast paced world, it is easy to grab and buy products without thinking about it. However, it is vital to slow down and become aware of where our products come from, so we can become conscious consumers.

Conscious consumption is a social movement that is linked with key phrases like social responsibility and sustainability. When you consciously consume, you are aware of the impact that your purchase decisions have on the environment and public health. As consumers, we are in control of what we buy and what we don’t buy. Our purchases can progress businesses to become a force for good, instead of just a source of profits.

How can you consciously consume?

1. Look for a B Corp certification

A B Corp certification is a way businesses can show that they are holding themselves accountable at the highest degree. B Corp businesses prioritize their employees, communities, and the environment. They work towards making a positive impact on the world. A few of the most popular B Corps are Patagonia and Ben & Jerrys.

2. Research your favorite brands

As consumers, we have the power to support the businesses that are working towards a better environment and society. It is important to research the brands that we buy because the cheapest prices aren’t always the fairest prices. By diving in deeper into businesses, we can see if businesses are treating their employees and the environment correctly.

3. Reduce your carbon footprint

You can reduce your carbon footprint by driving less. This can be done by walking, biking, carpooling, or traveling closer to home. You can also get your food from a direct source by supporting your local food markets. Not only will this reduce emissions, but buying locally will help the local economy and community.

4. Embrace minimalism

A popular Netflix show called “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” displayed the importance of minimalism and how to embrace it in your life. Minimalism can help distinguish between what is necessary and unnecessary. By being more selective and buying lasting quality items, we can reduce waste and declutter our minds & lifestyle.

5. Reuse items

We can reuse items to help eliminate single use plastics, reduce pollution, and sustain the environment. We can buy used goods at thrift stores and donate items for someone else to use. We can reassemble old boxes, instead of purchasing new boxes when moving. Rather than getting new plastic bags for every grocery trip, you can bring a tote to carry your items or reuse the paper bags from your last trip. Reusing items will save you money while helping the environment.
